Ingredient Synergism

By 23 March 2026No Comments

Synergism is a wonderful phenomenon that takes natural skincare to a whole new level. It allows simple, single ingredients to work together to bring about products that are more effective, balanced and nourishing than each ingredient could achieve on its own. But, with that said, synergism is not as easy as it sounds. It requires careful research and intentional formulation, to create the perfect product.

In our modern-day times, skincare products are filled with a few “good ingredients”, and furthermore ingredients that cannot even be recognized without a Google search. Although media has repeatedly told us that all skincare products absorb into the skin, how much of what we are told is true, science-based arguments? Let’s break it down…

Products usually contain ingredients that behave in one of two ways, either as surface workers or as active workers. Surface workers, as the name suggests, work on the surface of the skin. Examples of these include exfoliants, humectants, skin barrier repairers and soothers. Designed to treat the uppermost layer of the skin; surface workers do not deeply penetrate the skin. In other words, although skin feels nourished, smooth and clear straight after exfoliating, cleansing and moisturising; products containing mainly surface workers only provide surface-level action.

However, all skin concerns have a deeper root cause- one that goes beyond the surface. True skincare power lies in active ingredients that work beneath the skin. This is where support is needed, and where real repair and renewal take place. But with so many ingredients available today, how do we truly know which ones benefit our skin in a meaningful, lasting way? In our modern world where even “good” things are often overly processed or modified, choosing the right ingredients and products prove to be harder than ever. Some of our favourite active workers include:

  • Vitamin C: a pure, potent active compound that offers targeted action.
  • Pomegranate seed oil: deep nourishment by acting as an antioxidant and anti-ageing compound
  • Sweet orange essential oil: helps with skin brightening and collagen support
  • Jojoba oil: is essential for barrier repair

When paired with “support ingredients” like coconut oil, shea butter, avocado oil, hyaluronic acid or rosehip they work in harmony to bring about skin transformation. This phenomenon is called “Synergism”. Support ingredients prepare the skin; active workers then treat it.

More than just a product, ingredients from nature works with the skin, instead of against it. Skincare products should respect the skin’s natural structure, support its deeper needs and deliver results that are not only visible, but also lasting.

This is the intention behind truly effective skincare: no unnecessary complexity, but thoughtful simplicity- where every ingredient has a purpose and every combination is designed to bring out the best in your skin.
